Driving the French Pyrenees in the Mercedes AMG GT 63

There is a certain kind of freedom that comes with setting off before sunrise, coffee in hand, miles of road ahead, and the promise of new landscapes waiting beyond the horizon. For this trip, my companion was the Mercedes AMG GT 63, a car built to devour distance and deliver theatre at every turn.

The plan was simple: drive from the UK to the Pyrenees, camera gear loaded, and capture the changing character of Europe along the way. From the quiet backroads of southern England to the sweeping autoroutes of France, the GT 63 transformed the journey into an experience that felt effortless at pace yet endlessly engaging.

By the time we reached Provence, the drive had turned from transit to pleasure. The region greeted us with rolling vineyards, pastel villages, and sun-warmed air that felt unmistakably Mediterranean. We carved through narrow country lanes and lavender-lined stretches that seemed made for the GT 63, its V8 hum settling into a rhythm that perfectly matched the landscape.

This trip was also the first time I took my new Fuji GFX 100 II and its accompanying lenses on the road. The combination of high resolution and tonal depth brought a new dimension to automotive photography, capturing every detail of the GT 63’s sculpted form and the dramatic light of the mountains. It allowed me to shoot with precision and subtlety, creating images that truly reflected the scale and beauty of the journey.

From Provence, we turned southwest toward the Cols des Pyrénées, the twisting, elevated roads that define France’s border with Spain. Having driven the famous N260 on the Spanish side before, this time we chose the French route to see the mountains from a new perspective. It was the right decision. The French Pyrenees felt wilder and more dramatic, a quieter side of the range that rewards those who take the long way.

Each ascent revealed new light and texture: mist rising over the peaks, reflections dancing across the car’s curves, and moments where everything aligned, the car, the road, and the scenery in perfect harmony. These are the moments that remind me why I do what I do.

As an automotive photographer, I am not just chasing cars; I am chasing the feeling they create when design meets landscape. Over several days, I captured a series of images that tell that story, the precision of Mercedes AMG engineering set against the untamed beauty of the French Pyrenees.

Below is a selection of my favourite shots from the trip, a visual journey through Provence’s golden light and the commanding presence of the GT 63 in the mountains.

The road, the car, and the camera. Sometimes, that is all you need.
